Therese has a group of 30 or so girls that get together for a few hours every week. They learn skills and understand cultural expectations together but one of the most important things they get to do is talk and gain perspective. They discuss womanhood, family and education, future plans and what they want to do and know. One of the strong influences in the Haitian culture is unwed pregnancy and trading sex for food. This form of exploitation is well established and is easily taken as the norm if not combatted. Therese has been the powerhouse behind building her community, proactively keeping values that guide her youth in a positive direction while adding principles, skills and knowledge. Therese’s efforts so far have delivered a budding subculture of young women that are resistant to long held norms that enslave and limit potentials for these girls.
